“GrandLady” is my title of choice. It is another word for “Grandmother,” “Grandma,” “Nanna,” or “Granny.” It is particularly a special word because the relationship between elder and child is not based on a biological connection, but rather on Love and Acceptance. It was derived when my daughter, Malena, asked what I wanted my grandchildren to call me. I could not immediately give her an answer, but she was quite insistent on getting one. She was a planner, and this answer was part of a major plan in her life that she did not know would be short-lived. She transitioned at age thirty-three, the same year this conversation took place. After due consideration to her inquiry, I told her, “GRANDLADY.” She was thrilled with my choice.
